2 Blueprints for Lakeside’s new academic building are unveiled, showcasing new humanities and science classrooms, office spaces, and a café. The building is set to open for the 2026–2027 school year with construction expected to begin in late 2024.

4 In Chile, upwards of 90 deadly forest fires rage on, killing hundreds, displacing thousands, and necessitating a state of emergency. Although the fires were potentially set intentionally, their severity has largely been attributed to climate change, with rising temperatures causing heatwaves and droughts in southern parts of the country.

11 Israel launches airstrikes on Rafah, recovering two hostages held by Hamas since October 7 and killing around 100 people. Following the Israeli military’s order, 1.4 million Palestinians had evacuated to Rafah in northeastern Egypt since the start of the war in Gaza.

13 Lakeside announces changes to lunch services for the 2024–2025 school year and a new partnership with SAGE Dining, which works with several independent schools in the Seattle area. Changes will take effect next school year and include a yearly $1,600 fee for all students covering lunch costs.

13 The House of Representatives successfully impeaches Alejandro Mayorkas, secretary of the Department of Homeland Security, after its first unsuccessful attempt on Feb. 6. House Republicans accuse Mayorkas of breaking immigration laws regarding the way he has handled the ongoing crisis at the southern border. Mayorkas becomes the first member of a president’s cabinet to be impeached in over a century.

14 As the Kansas City Chiefs return to Missouri for the Super Bowl parade, celebrating their win over the San Francisco 49ers, a mass shooting occurs at the conclusion of celebrations, killing radio station DJ Lisa Lopez-Galvan and injuring at least 21 more.

17 Lakeside Boys Swim & Dive becomes the 3A State Champions at the state finals held at the King County Aquatic Center. Lakeside’s Girls Basketball team defeats reigning State champs Garfield 60–43 to become Sea-King District 2 Champions and the No. 2 seed going into the State tournament.
