The mid-trip flew by, and we’re now quite close to our return back home! Over the past few weeks and this weekend’s reflection, I’ve had the pleasure of immersing myself
in the “Pura Vida!” of Costa Rica.
“Pura Vida” is more than a greeting or a catchy t
ourism slogan. It’s the peaceful and tranquil way of life that differs so greatly from my typical fast-paced and busy days in the US. Although I miss my family back h
ome, I’m grateful for the opportunity I’ve gotten to slow down and enjoy the small moments here.
The following are my top three “Pura Vida” moments from the past few days.

Breakfast on the mid-trip reflection (Jul. 7)
The sun was shining and familiar songs were being played on the speaker near our cute table. As we waited for the food, we chatted, read a Spanish picture book out loud, and admired our surroundings. Despite the fact that the food took over an hour to arrive at our tables, I felt at ease without a to-do list of what I needed to complete that day.
Boat rides to and from our village (Jul. 5 & 7)
I’ve never been a huge fan of nature or boats, but I think the canoe rides on the river to our village may have converted me. The scenery of tall green trees on mountains in the background of a calm river with light waves and ripples is a picturesque sight. There’s a real pure beauty in the landscape that calmed me during the hour-long rides on either end of the mid-trip.

Sipping tea at the table with my host family (every day)
In the mornings and evenings, I’m served a miracle herbal tea made with medicinal plants from the com
munity. I slowly sip the warm drink from my mug and take in what’s happening around me. I smile at little Brayan painting and Yeimi taking a turn in the card game. My host parents chat with me, Kenneth asking about my day and Katia adding a “Ay, Sachi!”
Looking ahead, I’m excited to continue this “Pura Vida” into the children’s camp that we are organizing in the next couple of days AND beyond into my life in Seattle. Hasta muy pronto, y Pura Vida!
