Democrats will take control of the U.S. House of Representatives, Tatler projects, flipping the chamber from Republican control and giving the Democratic Party a major check on President Donald Trump during the final two years of his term.
NBC News projects Democrats will win approximately 244 seats, well above the 218 needed for a majority. The final number could change as remaining votes are counted. The result gives Democrats control of the House for the first time since 2022.
The victory is a significant setback for Republicans, who entered the election controlling both chambers of Congress. Democrats campaigned on concerns about the economy, health care and the direction of the Trump administration. NBC News exit polling found that nearly half of voters viewed the election as an opportunity to rebuke Trump, while 62% disapproved of his job performance.
With the majority, Democrats are expected to elect Rep. Hakeem Jeffries of New York as speaker. Jeffries would become the first Black speaker of the House. Democrats will also take control of House committees, giving them greater power to investigate the administration and determine which legislation receives consideration.
The result does not give Democrats control of the entire Congress. The Senate remains undecided, with Democrats flipping seats in North Carolina and South Carolina and making gains in other competitive races. Control of the Senate will determine whether Republicans or Democrats lead the chamber and oversee confirmation votes for presidential nominees.
The new House will take office Jan. 3, 2027. Its relationship with the White House is expected to be a central part of the next two years, as Democrats gain new oversight powers while Trump remains president.
