Dearest readers,
Welcome to the first Tatler special issue of the year! For those who don’t know, Tatler publishes one or two special issues every year covering topical news or highlighting a feature of Lakeside that merits particular
attention. Special issues also often spotlight creative visuals or unique design elements (and this year’s special issue is no exception).
After several weeks of brainstorming culminating in voting in September, Tatler staff came to a strong consensus on our next special issue theme: “What Does it Mean to be a Lakesider?” This salient question has stuck in my mind throughout my seven years at Lakeside. As a wide-eyed sixth grader, a high school freshman listening to the new Head of School Kai Bynum deliver his famous “you are special” speech, and a senior now preparing for my last year here, I’ve wondered what it really means to be a part of a well-reputed educational institution, with a rich history and unique opportunities, like Lakeside.
Tatler staff members and guest-writers spent the past month and a half examining this complex question from a variety of perspectives within the community. Spoiler: we didn’t get a singular definitive answer to the question…and that’s okay. The truth is that the Lakeside identity is nuanced and multifaceted. Nevertheless, our investigation has provided us with fascinating insights into the topic. Read on for a reflection on comparison culture at Lakeside, an expose on drunk driving at the school, a look into a favorite Lakeside Instagram account that’s spreading positivity, and more. Enjoy!
