What inspires your fashionw?
IG: Okay I loooooove pinterest I have so many boards dedicated to fashion. Of course, I also scroll on insta but my favorite source of inspo is seeing other people’s outfits. But if I’m being honest, it’s mostly just pinterest!
SH: I’d say I pull my inspiration from a blend of different styles. I’m drawn to the ’90s skater look, for one — think wider jeans, thermals under t-shirts, button-ups, vintage windbreakers. I also like the idea of mixing in slightly dressier pieces, like collared shirts or loafers. And I’m into elements of Gorpcore (technical, outdoors-influenced style, great for the PNW), trying to adapt tiny parts of it into my own style. Honestly, if I had the budget, I’d dress pretty differently, but for now I’m trying to make the most of what I have and blend these influences into something unique that appeals to me.
Where do you usually get your clothes?
IG: My dad always says he’s “thrifty, not cheap” and I think I took that to heart. For the most part I get my clothes secondhand. Not only is it less expensive, it’s more fun because you never know what you’re going to find. Plus, it’s more sustainable and in my opinion so much cooler.
SH: A lot of my current clothes are thrifted (U-District and Capitol Hill have some great spots). A lot of my wardrobe is also recycled from past years or borrowed from family; I rarely buy brand-new clothes anymore. In Indian tradition, though, it’s common to receive a new outfit from your parents for celebrations/festivals (like Dipavali or Pongal), so that’s been my main source of brand-new clothing over the past couple of years.
What’s a fashion trend (optionally at lakeside) you wish there was more/less of?
IG: At Lakeside, I wish people expressed themselves more through their clothing. I wanna see more boldness. I want to see more diys, more creativity, I want to see a glimpse into who someone is through their outfit you know?
SH: Not to be judgmental — to each their own — but sagging has never made sense to me. I did go down a bit of a rabbit hole once, and it actually has a pretty interesting history.
