It’s been six years since 25-year-old right fielder Corbin Carroll ’19 was drafted 16th overall as a senior at Lakeside. Now in his fourth MLB season, the Arizona Diamondback continues to put up historic numbers with his offensive versatility. This season, through the end of August, he leads the league in triples which, if he keeps it up, will make him the first player to do so in three consecutive seasons since Gary Templeton in 1979. Not only that, but his 16 triples combined with 23 stolen bases and 29 home runs are three single-season accomplishments that have never been achieved by the same player in one year, with a month still left in the season. In other words, his unique combination of power and speed makes him unlike any other player, ever. And those 29 home runs have already cleared his career best of 25 during the 2023 season.
It’s no wonder that he was an All-Star for the second time in his short career and is putting up lifetime-best stats. He’s not just a top-tier fielder, but also 7th in the league in slugging with a career high .884 OPS. With a 4.4 WAR (a metric measuring how many wins an individual player contributes to a team compared to an average replacement player), Carroll is easily the MVP of an Arizona team currently building for the future. From Rookie of the Year to face of the franchise, it’s easy to see that Corbin Carroll’s name will go down in history.
