Magic Stomach Turns Tie into Win
In a back-and-forth Metro League Finals rematch, the girls soccer team collected a key 1-0 win over Holy Names. In the final minutes of the game, Poppy H. ’23 received the ball off of a short corner-kick and passed to Eleanor M. ’24, who slotted the ball on a dime between two Holy Names defenders to Preslie L. ’25’s stomach and in.
After a frustrating tie to state runners-up Seattle Prep two days before, the Lions were happy to come out of the week’s gauntlet with a win, putting them at second in Metro League standings. After a hard-fought but unyielding first half with Lakeside on the offensive, Holy names stepped up after halftime to put pressure on Lakeside. After a couple misses over the crossbar from the Cougars, Lakeside began to break the pressure. Fiona L. ’24 sent a pass to Preslie at the top of the eighteen-yard box, but the sophomore’s shot was saved by the goalkeeper. A few minutes later, despite a mid-game switch to center-back from her usual spot in the midfield, Eleanor still managed to assist the game-winning goal.
The Lions look to continue their hot start as defending state champions at home in another rematch against Holy Names on October 6th.
